The Pianist (2002) Wladyslaw Szpilman, a famous Polish Jewish pianist working for Warsaw radio, sees his whole world collapse with the outbreak of World War II and the invasion of Poland in September 1939. After the radio station is rocked by explosions from German bombing, Szpilman goes home and learns that Great Britain and France have declared war on Nazi Germany. He and his family rejoice, believing the war will end quickly. When the Nazis' armed SS organization occupies Warsaw after the regular army passes on, living conditions for the Jewish population gradually deteriorate as their rights are slowly eroded: first they are allowed only a limited amount of money per family, then they must wear armbands imprinted with the blue Star of David to identify themselves, and eventually, late in 1940, they are all forced into the squalid Warsaw Ghetto. There, they face hunger, persecution and humiliation from the SS and the ever present fear of death or torture. The Nazis became increasingly sadistic and the family experiences and/or witnesses many horrors inflicted on their neighbours. (One scene in which the German soldiers entered one of the Jewish homes and ordered that family, who were eating dinner at that time, to stand. However, one of them ,an old man on a wheelchair, could not stand. The officer leading the man-hunt mercilessly ordered him to be thrown off the balcony, while the Szpilman family watched in horror. Others caught were forced to ran, while the soldiers shot them one by one.) Szpilman is saved at the last moment by one of the Jewish Ghetto Police, who happens to be a family friend. However, his separated family, along with thousands of others, were deported by train to the extermination facility at Treblinka. Fleeing from one hiding place to another, Szpilman nearly died due to jaundice and malnutrition. In his last hiding place, while trying to open a can of Polish pickles, Szpilman realizes to his horror that he is being watched from behind by the Captain of the regular German army, Wilm Hosenfeld. Upon questioning Szpilman and discovering that he is a pianist, Hosenfeld asks Szpilman to play something for him on the grand piano that happens to be in the building. After Chopin's Ballade in G minor was played, he lets Szpilman continue hiding in the attic of the building and even brings Szpilman food regularly, thus saving his life. Title cards shown just before the end credits reveal that Szpilman continued to live in Warsaw and died in 2000, but that Hosenfeld died in 1952 in a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp. [Info obtained from Wikipedia, ...most of it.] A movie that is both beautifully acted and directed, with a beautiful piano piece that connects it all. Truly one that is worthwhile the title of an Oscar Movie! Posted by Yukari.由香里 at

To all the lovely couples out there, wish you guys all the best in years to come! To all the singles....you are not alone! XD Maybe one day you'll find your true love, but in the mean time, lets celebrate the joy of being single!!! Haha, Valentine doesn't really mean anything to me, since I've spent most of my years not celebrating it. Normally I wouldn't receive anything, but I remember during my Sec 4 year (had no idea what happened to us), I received bunch of gifts, chocolates, sweets from my classmates and schoolmates. Maybe we all felt that since that was the last year we'd had together after our O's...why don't we show how much we loved each other! Hence, that was my first (hopefully not the last) Valentine's Day ever....one which I would not easily forget. So, Singles, Valentine's day is not only for Lovers but also for your closest and best of friends and family. Show them how much you appreciate and love them:) Here, I'm gonna send all my (Cyber-ly) love and appreciation to Min, Pei, Bao, Roz, Mus, Diy, Xin, Chun, Lyon, Tam, Amanda, 4e4 , 0841C (+ Mr Billy) and members of ZSS ELDDS'07 ! I Love You All! Now I'm going to eat my wonderful Ferrero Rocher and enjoy some dramas! Happy Valentines' Day!!! Posted by Yukari.由香里 at

I just wanna say this...Thank you Min for the Lady Gaga songs!!! They are so cool and fun to listen to! XD I should have updated my Saturday entry long time ago cos that was the only time(this year, so far)I've been out for almost the whole day, without any contact with my Laptop or TV ***Claps wildly!!*** A big achievement! Ok.... Anyway, In the morning I met up with Pei, Min, Bao and went to Jurong Point. Actually, We didn't know what to do after we've reached there (talk about bad planning....and I'm the one planning! x_x) Since Min rushed out of the house and had not eaten her breakfast, we decided to eat lunch. We took the brochure and went hunting for restaurants. Have I mentioned that I really miss them? Pei was as crazy as ever and it reminds me about the time we had when the four of us would sit at the IJC canteen and laugh our heads out. All in less than 1 year...can you believe that? We finally found a place to eat. It was something like an American Diner (yes, with huge servings of food). We sat next to a table of some American workers and Wow...you should have seen what they are eating. Our normal meal would be just appetizers to them! I ordered a creamy Pasta, which turned out to be Extremely creamy...I had to put ALOT of salt to make it taste better. However, I just couldn't take it...so I just finish the chicken in it and left the pasta, yes..a plate full. (I'm Sorry!!!) Min ordered fried chicken thigh topped with mozarella...much better than mine...I should have gotten that! Initially, Pei wasn't gonna eat anything...She was going to order plain water! In the end we forced her to get a potato salad, which didn't turn out either... Well, the best is still Bao's Billy's Banana Split (isn't it a nice name?..nevermind..) I mean, who could hate Ice Cream? I really wish we'd meet up again next time. Posted by Yukari.由香里 at
